On September 6, 2012, our Pupcake had her first litter. According to her veterinarian she had 6 possibly 7 pups. I had been checking Pupcake's temperature two times a day for a little over a week and her temperature finally dropped to 97.5 at approx. 11:00 am. Although Pupcake showed no signs of distress, I was sure the moment was not far. I have been very cautious for weeks now not leaving her alone as I wasn't sure that she would know what to do. Her first pup arrived at 1:49. This was horrible timing as I should have been leaving in 11 minutes to pick the kids up from school. Luckily my sister just happened to be here to help. There was no panting, no shaking, nothing! All of the sudden
VOILA! Out comes puppy number 1! I was ready but at the same time not so ready! I quickly rushed to put on my gloves, begged my sister to find the floss (which we couldn't find even though it was right in front of us) sterilized scissors and towels which were already prepared for the big moment.
- Baby No. 1 Comes out at 1:49 pm Its a girl! 6.7 oz
- Baby No. 2 Comes out at 3:15 pm Its a girl! 7.5 oz
- Baby No. 3 Comes out at 3:54 pm Its a girl! 6.9 oz
- Baby No. 4 Comes out at 4:28 pm Its a boy! 6.5 oz
- Baby No. 5 Comes out at 4:42 pm Its a girl! 7.2 oz
- Baby No. 6 Comes out at 5:15 pm Its a girl! 7.4 oz
Some time went by and I was shocked at how fast it all seemed to happen. A baby would pop out and when I was almost finished cleaning it out would come another! Pupcake had no clue what to do with baby No. 1 so I am glad I was by her side to help her break the sack, suction the nose and mouth and get the baby going. With baby No. 2 & 3 it was pretty much the same, by the time baby No. 4 came she knew what to do but I was a little anxious so I helped her just a tad.

Finally at 7:22 pm out came baby No. 7! Another girl weighing in at 7.4 oz. I was thinking there might be only 6 since the others came in a timely manner. My sister and I had already cleaned up a majority of the mess and put the supplies away. I think Pupcake was also surprised at No. 7 because she just looked at the baby in the sack when it popped out. It took a couple seconds but she did all the work and I pitched in to help her get the sack off the puppies head, tie off the umbilical cord and cut it. So we had 7 after all! All were in the perfect position and the delivery went smooth. It was exciting, amazing, tiring, so many emotions, but in the end it was totally worth it. I sleep right next to them every night and have not left their side unless I have a responsible adult to watch over them. Things couldn't be better right now in a house full of 7 itty bitty puppies. If this ever happens again it will not be on travertine floors! My knee's ached all 4 hours that I slept that night. Pupcake has lost her girlish figure but gained 7 bundles of joy she loves dearly. She watches over them carefully. It is so amazing to see nature at work.
